The original ringwork was built on elevated ground close to the Welsh-English border in the late 11th or the early 12th century. It is oval in shape and 300 by 320 feet in size. The mound measures approximately 100 by 150 feet across the top and is surrounded by a steep-sided rock-cut ditch which in turn is protected by a steep-sided rampart between 35 and 50 feet wide. The castle was extended and strenghtened in the 13th century when a stone round tower, a curtain wall and the D-shaped side and gate towers were added. It was probably abandoned in the 14th century and now only earthworks remain.
