The castle ringwork is on high ground within an Iron Age hill-fort and it stands next to the ruins of St Mary’s church. It covers an area of 160 by 110 feet, and it is protected by a ditch. Nothing of certainty is known of its history but it is thought to have belonged to the Bishops of Llandaff.
