The original fort of Olenacum, which was used until AD150, was square in plan with sides measuring 345 feet on each side inside the ramparts and the outer double ditch. It was later levelled and replaced by a larger fort built in the 4th century that measured 603 feet by 406 feet. Only the earthworks now remain of the fort and the original Roman road running through it.
