The castle mound of what is thought to be an early Welsh castle stands on the south-west side of St Illtyd's church. The circular, flat-topped mound is about 120 feet in diameter and 12 feet high with a mutilated summit and a ditch running around the base. It is probably the precursor of the nearby Castell Taliorum with its two great towers that stood a few hundred yards away to the north of the churchyard.
