RUFUS CASTLE

Portland has been an important naval base and consequently is well defended. The first Norman structure to be built was Rufus Castle in the 11th or 12th century on the east side of Portland Bill. The pentagonal tower that stands there now was built in the 15th century on top of the earlier foundations.

Managed by English Heritage.
