WATERCROOK (ALAUNA) FORT

WATERCROOK FORT
Photo Matthew Emmott

A fort known by the Romans as Alauna Fort was established at Watercrook just before the end of the second century. From here the Romans built a road to Ravenglass, over Wrynose and Hardknott passes. The raised outer bank is still visible.
