BALLANDS CASTLE

BALLANDS CASTLE
Photo Andrew Tivenan

A motte and bailey castle with the motte at the north of the site and inner and outer baileys to the south. The motte is 10 feet high and is surrounded by a ditch. The inner bailey measures 75 by 50 feet in size and the outer, separated from the inner by a ditch, is almost twice the size.

Castle Orchard is a mile to the north east and Cockroad Wood motte a mile to the north west. All 3 are probably of a similar Norman date.
