It was built in about 1220 by the Welsh on top of a hill, 1000 feet above Llangolen, on the site of an Iron Age fort. It was badly damaged in 1277 when it was burnt by the Welsh before they abandoned it. Rather than being rebuilt, it was superseded by the new Holt Castle. Now little more than earthworks and a few pieces of wall remain.
