Part of the Western Heights defences which also comprise The Citadel, North Centre Bastion and Drop Redoubt, St Martin's Battery and Citadel Batteries.

Only foundations remain of the Grand Shaft Barracks built in 1806.

The Grand Shaft Staircase was constructed between 1806 and 1809. It is a unique 140 foot, 26 foot diameter, triple spiral staircase which leads from Western Heights down to Snargate Street to allow troops to descend the 200 steps rapidly in case of a landing on the shore. It was restored in the 1980's and is open in the summer.
